Construction machinery and prefabricated components make the construction of field fortifications considerably quicker. Fortifications are constructed from elements brought to the location — both dugouts for pairs of soldiers and bunkers for quartering. The bunkers are intended for one platoon (max 10 people).
The most common type of prefabricated fortification component in use is the concrete slab bunker. The bunker has a pitched roof and consists of reinforced-concrete slabs and pillars. The components weigh a total of 16 tonnes, and the bunker takes two to three hours to erect for an experienced digger or crane operator and two assistants.
The quartering portion of the reinforced-concrete arch bunker requires an excavation of 40 to 50 cubic metres. When completed, the bunker provides protection against artillery shell burs
